A group of Cal Poly seniors found a way to meet their class assignment and give something back to the local community. Six Architectural Engineering students donated a bridge worth $100,000 to the County Golf Course at Dairy Creek. Two hundred hours of engineering and 2000 hours of construction labor were required to design and build the bridge. The students raised $4150 in cash and collected donations of $1000 from KPFF Consulting Engineers, $5000 by PDM Steel and $4000 from local businesses. They also received a $500 Senior Project Grant from KNA Engineering. The bridge, that crosses a tributary creek, will protect sensitive habitat on the golf course, which publicizes its environmental awareness. We decided to do more than the usual paper model, stated project manager Ryan Pursley. We wanted to give something back to the community that has been our home for five years. The design is an undulating double curve 2-span steel bridge. One student studied welding to acquire the necessary skills to assist in the construction. Skill in structural steel design, concrete formwork, steel fabrication, welding and landscaping were required. The team had to complete the bridge while keeping up with the demands of their classes.
