Fall Connections
Greetings CAED Community,
I’m proud to share our fall issue of Connections Quarterly featuring the accomplishments of CAED students. From innovative design to impactful, multidimensional Learn by Doing projects, the passion of our students is felt across California and beyond.
Please join me in celebrating: architectural engineering students who visited Pedernales, Ecuador to assist with earthquake mitigation by building with resilient and sustainably sourced bamboo; an interdisciplinary student team who visited the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona to install solar-powered refrigeration; a third-year architecture student winning first place in a national steel design competition; a V.E.S.T. Hackathon that reimagined the safety vest to protect all bodies; and a construction management alumna who is a standout leader and role model.

SESH 2022
During the summer of 2022, a group of architectural engineering students and a faculty advisor went to the seismically active region of Pedernales, Ecuador. Partnered with Miyamoto Engineering, the Structural Engineering Students for Humanity (SESH) assisted the impacted community in designing and constructing bamboo structures.
Project Assists Navajo Nation
Over Cal Poly’s spring break in 2022, a group of dedicated students and faculty traveled to the Navajo Nation in northeastern Arizona for a week of collaboration with the Diné people.
‘Tomols’ Takes Top Honor
Cal Poly architecture student Ron Patanavin earned first place in the national steel design competition sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction and the Association of Collegiate Schools of Architecture.
The First V.E.S.T. Hackathon
Construction safety experts met at Cal Poly this past spring to recreate an overlooked tool: the safety vest.
Honored Alumni
Susan Rozakis recently sat down with the college to discuss her reaction to receiving the Honored Alumni Award, her role as a leader at Google, her undergraduate studies at Cal Poly and her hopes for future involvement with the university.
