Dr. Jeong Woo Appointed Department Head of the Construction Management Department

SAN LUIS OBISPO - Dr. Jeong Woo has been appointed Department Head of the Construction Management Department, effective Fall 2019. Dr. Woo will succeed Dr. Allan Hauck, who will retire in July and continue teaching part-time.

Dr. Woo holds a Master's degree in Construction Management and Ph.D. in Architecture from Texas A&M University. His undergraduate degree was earned in Architectural Engineering from Kyung Won University.

Cal Poly’s College of Architecture and Environmental Design to Host Annual Design Village Competition April 26-28 in Poly Canyon

SAN LUIS OBISPO — A temporary community of unique, student-built shelters will spring up in Poly Canyon April 26-28 during Cal Poly’s Design Village competition, hosted by the College of Architecture and Environmental Design.

One of the college’s largest and most-anticipated events, the annual competition draws nearly 400 students from 14 schools throughout the Golden State to participate in Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing philosophy as they design, build and inhabit structures in rural Poly Canyon, located about a mile from the heart of campus.

Reimagine Paradise: Cal Poly Architecture Students Design Future of Devastated Northern California Town 

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Three months after the Camp Fire destroyed much of the Northern California town of Paradise, Cal Poly students are working on plans intended to give its thousands of displaced residents hope for the future. Thirty-six third-year architecture students are coordinating with peers from two other universities to reimagine how Paradise can rebuild after the devasting fire killed 86 people and burned more than 13,900 homes in November.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — In recognition of extraordinary commitment and dedication, Cal Poly architecture Professor Thomas Fowler has been selected a 2019 recipient of the prestigious Wang Family Excellence Award by the California State University (CSU).

The annual award, established in 1998, recognizes four outstanding CSU faculty members and one staff member who have distinguished themselves by exemplary contributions and achievements.

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly construction management students garnered four first-place trophies at the recent Associated Schools of Construction Region 3 Division Competition in Downers Grove, Illinois. This is the first year that Cal Poly’s teams have swept first place in all of the open national categories of Concrete, Electrical, Preconstruction, and Project Solutions.

Cal Poly Architecture Students to Exhibit Furniture Designs in 15th Annual Show Nov. 2 and 3

 SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Architecture Department is co-hosting the 15th annual Vellum Furniture Design Exhibition with Vellum Design Build, a San Luis Obispo design-and-build firm, on Nov. 2 and 3. The juried competition asks students to conceive and construct projects that range from tables and chairs to light fixtures, toys and other furniture design solutions that will be on display in downtown San Luis Obispo at 1185 Monterey St., between Santa Rosa and Toro streets.

Cal Poly Architecture and Landscape Architecture Programs Earn High Rankings in 2018-19 DesignIntelligence National Survey

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly’s Bachelor of Architecture program continues to be regarded as No. 1 among public universities in the U.S., according to the 2018-19 DesignIntelligence rankings of the country’s most admired architecture and design schools.
 
Out of more than 50 accredited undergraduate programs in the nation’s public and private schools of architecture, Cal Poly placed third overall among the 35 ranked by DesignIntelligence.

Professor Thomas Fowler teaches third-year design and building technology courses.

Professor Thomas Fowler teaches third-year design and building technology courses, works with independent study students and co-teaches a combined interdisciplinary fourth-year studio and a graduate-level building design studio. He brings more than 30 years of teaching and a breadth of design experience that are not lost on architecture students at any level of the program. 

“I can say he challenges me to think about where I am in life, how I am learning, and how to take charge of my own learning in ways I haven’t done in the past,” said one senior in her nomination letter.

Giving to the CAED

Students in the ARCH 241 - Architectural Technology Fundamentals class display their custom-designed and handmade bricks. With the support of WRNS Architects in San Francisco, the class traveled to Pacific Clay in Lake Elsinore to make the bricks, after firing, they were shipped up to Cal Poly.
