Omar Faruque Appointed Department Chair for Landscape Architecture
The College of Architecture & Environmental Design has appointed Omar Faruque as the department chair of the Landscape Architecture Department.
“Architecture of the landscape, at every scale – small, large or regional– is a profound and important human experience,” said professor Omar Faruque, “It needs a careful orchestration of teaching and scholarship to provide quality education for this challenging field, and we at Cal Poly have the national reputation for it.”
Faruque received his undergraduate and graduate education in landscape architecture and architecture from Texas A&M University. Licensed in both fields, he practiced in Texas, Louisiana, Michigan, and Indiana. He has been involved in designing university campuses, office complexes, residential communities, and a major new town in Texas.
Faruque served as the director of design and planning for Architectural Development Corporation of Dallas and as the vice president of Archimetrics Inc., a Dallas based multidisciplinary professional office. He taught at Texas A&M and Ball State University before joining Cal Poly.
Faruque has offered many workshops on creative design and design communication for various universities, the American Institute of Architects, and the American Society of Landscape Architects. He authored Graphic Communication as a Design Tool (published by Van Nostrand Reinhold Company, John Wiley and Sons, and Macmillan Publication), a theory book on design communication that has been translated into several languages, and, for a decade, was listed as an essential reading by the Council of Landscape Architecture Registration Boards.
Faruque’s research interest includes design theory, design communication, cultural landscape, and landscape narrative.
