Michael Boswell Appointed as Department Head for City & Regional Planning Department

The College of Architecture and Environmental Design has appointed Mike Boswell as the Department Head of the City and Regional Planning Department, beginning in September 2016.

Mike has served Cal Poly as a faculty member in the CRP department since 1998, and as a full professor since 2011. He was the graduate program coordinator for 11 years. 

Boswell worked as a professional planner for Brevard County, Fla., the East Central Florida Regional Planning Council and the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. His community service leadership includes having served on the board of the San Luis Obispo County Bicycle Coalition and as a member and Chair of the City of San Luis Obispo Planning Commission.

Boswell received his Master of Science and Doctorate Degree in Urban and Regional Planning from Florida State University. He has published on topics such as climate action planning, hazard mitigation, adaptive management and governance, local government planning and decision-making, and sustainable development.

Boswell is honored to be selected to lead the department in achieving its mission and sees great potential for the future.  “We continue to be recognized as the preeminent practice-based planning program in the country and our reputation among practitioners in California is second to none because of our top-notch faculty, staff, students, and alumni.”

Boswell will succeed Hemalata Dandekar, who is stepping down as Department Head after seven years. Dandekar will continue teaching in the City and Regional Planning Department.
