Cal Poly Construction Management Students Dominate National Competition with Wins in Four Categories

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Cal Poly construction management students ranked highly at the recent 30th annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Region 6 and 7 competition in Reno, Nevada.

Four of 12 Cal Poly teams brought home trophies Feb. 11, including a first-place win in the Commercial category. Cal Poly placed second in the Concrete Solutions, Sustainability, and Mechanical Systems categories.

The competition challenged teams of six students to solve real-life construction management problems in nine categories. Teams were given 18 hours to create and present deliverables to a panel of industry experts, included modeling, estimating, scheduling and site logistics. The competition drew 182 teams from 45 universities.

“The ASC Competitions each year challenge our students to apply the management and professional practice skills they will need to be successful in their future careers,” Department Head Allan Hauck said. “They also have the opportunity to compare those skills against other students from across the country. These competitions are a critical part of the Learn by Doing education for which Cal Poly is known.

“I was particularly impressed with the Commercial Building team this year, which I had the privilege to coach, and its first-place finish among some very serious challengers.”
